Paul Temple

The character Paul Temple, created by Francis Durbridge, was a crime novelist and amateur detective partnered by his glamorous wife, Steve. They were on the radio from 1938 until 1968 in one of the BBC's most popular series. The only shows still in existence date from the mid-1950's and offer a fascinating insight into audiences' expectations and tastes of the period. To modern listeners the programmes with their wordiness, and displays of deference by everyone to the Temples, seem to belong to another era. In fact, they must have appeared anachronistic even in the 1960's!
